Why RippleImpact Exists

Be the Change.

RippleImpact was created to help people find meaningful ways to contribute to their communities.

We believe stronger communities are built when people actively participate through volunteering, supporting local organizations, attending events, mentoring others, and helping causes they care about.

Every action creates a ripple.

RippleImpact is a Community Action Platform — not a news website, political platform, social network or charity. The focus is participation, not consuming information.

RippleImpact is intentionally non-political, non-partisan, non-religious, community-focused, action-oriented and impact-driven. The platform exists solely to help people strengthen their communities through positive action.

How opportunities are sourced

RippleImpact is organization-first. Listings are discovered through a curated list of established Canadian organizations and, as a fallback, the public Volunteer Connector network (refreshed every 6 hours). For every organization we then look up its own website, volunteer page, donation page, contact details and social links, and Apply, Donate and Register buttons go straight to the organization whenever a direct link exists. Organizations include — food banks, hospitals, animal shelters, conservation authorities, libraries, YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, the Canadian Red Cross and more. Expired listings are removed automatically.

How charities are verified

The Verified Organization badge is based on official public records: a name match in the Canada Revenue Agency's public list of registered charities, a municipal government website, a hospital or health-system website, or an organization website we list directly. Hover the badge to see which checks passed. Automatic rules exclude political parties and campaigns, advocacy and activist groups, religious organizations and faith-based outreach, paid job postings, sales and multi-level marketing.

How fundraisers are verified

Fundraisers are listings from those same verified organizations that clearly involve donating or fundraising. RippleImpact never handles money and shows no goal or raised amounts we cannot confirm — the Donate button always goes to the organization itself.

How community stories are selected

We read public feeds from national outlets plus dozens of community newspapers — including the Village Media network, Glacier Media papers and northern outlets. Politics, international news and opinion are filtered out, then AI keeps only stories with a clear local action — volunteer, donate, attend, mentor, foster, sponsor or support — and links each one to matching opportunities. AI can make mistakes, so every story links to the original article.

Why RippleImpact excludes political content

Political and ideological content divides people. Community needs — a full food bank, a shelter at capacity, a park that needs planting — bring people together. Keeping politics out lets anyone, of any view, find a way to help.

Why RippleImpact focuses on local action

Awareness alone doesn't change much. Every item on RippleImpact answers one question: what can I do about this? Local action is where one person's effort is felt most directly.

RippleImpact does not estimate impact. RippleImpact measures participation — success is real participation, not estimated outcomes.

How Interested counts are calculated

Every opportunity, fundraiser and event has an Interested button. Each browser can count once per listing, and tapping again removes it. No account or personal data is involved — just an anonymous random ID stored in your browser.

How Attended counts are recorded

Attended means you took part, attended, volunteered, donated or plan to. It is self-reported by visitors in the same way — once per browser per listing — and RippleImpact does not claim it is verified by organizers. A light daily limit per network discourages automated inflation.

How participation statistics are aggregated

Counts are added up by category, organization, province and listing type (volunteer, event, fundraiser) for the chosen period: past 7, 30, 90 days or past year. Views are counted once per browser per listing.

How Action Momentum™ is calculated

Action Momentum compares participation in the current period with the period just before it: (current − previous) ÷ previous. +5% or more is Rising, −5% or less is Declining, and anything in between is Stable.

How rankings are generated

Categories and organizations are ranked by Interested + Attended actions in the selected period. Leaderboards show the most viewed, most interested, most attended and fastest-growing listing in each category. Rankings update automatically as people take part.
